This training will introduce FRC staff to the intersections of trauma-informed practice and diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. We will explore how adopting strategies and philosophies from both movements can lead to safer and healthier organizational and service environments for all. In this interactive session, Dr. Phylicia Bediako will share insights from trauma-informed and diversity, equity, and inclusion research to help participants reflect on strengths and areas for improvement in their own practices and organizations.

Meet the Trainer - ​Phylicia Bediako, MSW, PhD

​Phylicia Bediako, MSW, PhD is dedicated to connecting research, practice, and policy to build safe, healthy, and economically viable communities. She has a special interest in using trauma-informed approaches to promote healthy functioning and sustainability of organizations and leaders at the forefront of community and economic development and social justice efforts. She holds a Master of Social Work with a concentration in Violence and Injury Prevention from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. As a master’s student, she explored systems-level strategies for addressing public health and social issues that stem from community and historical trauma. Prior to her MSW, Dr. Bediako earned a dual-title doctorate degree in Health Policy and Administration and Demography from the Pennsylvania State University, where she investigated systems-level and cross-sectoral collaborative approaches to addressing disparities in sexual and reproductive health and maternal and child health.

Most recently, her work has supported organizations such as WEPOWER, the Women’s Entrepreneurship in Early Childhood Education Partnership, the Community Innovation and Action Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Ready by 21 at the United Way of Greater St. Louis. Dr. Bediako also has experience developing and coordinating professional development and training opportunities and resources for a variety of audiences, including physicians, graduate students, mental health professionals, community development leaders, and K-12 educators and administrators. She is currently based in Phoenix, AZ and serving as Curriculum Administrator for the Arizona Trauma Institute.
