Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidenced-based practice that centers on the motivational processes within the individual that facilitate change. These skills used in numerous settings when someone is struggling with a behavior change, decision fatigue, or exploring ambivalence. “Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change.” (Miller; Rollnick, 2013)
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe three communication styles and common communication “roadblocks" 2. Review the components of the “Spirit” of Motivational Interviewing
3. Identify core Motivational Interviewing skills to assist with positive communication 4. Get an introduction to the "OARS (Open questions, Affirmation, Reflective listening, and Summary reflections) technique"
5. Manage and repair breakdowns in the member-provider relationship
6. Practical application within professional and home life
This training is offered free of charge to FRN members and Early Childhood Nutrition Team members and their staff through support from First Things First.
